Mike Holmes on Aging at Home: 6 Smart Home Changes Without Major Renovation

Aging at home is a smart choice for many who want to maintain independence and stay in their homes as they grow older. The best part? You don’t need major renovations to make your space safer and more comfortable.

In Season 5, Episode 3 of the Holmes on Homes Podcast, available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, or watch the full episode on YouTube, Mike Holmes and his daughter Sherry Holmes sit down with Accessibility Specialist Ronny Wiskin from MED+ Health to talk about the most valuable aging-in-place home modifications and why it’s never too early to start planning.

Here are simple, affordable updates that can help:

1. Add Grab Bars

Install grab bars in the bathroom, especially near the toilet and inside the shower. They provide critical support and can prevent falls, a leading cause of injury in older adults. Also, consider using a portable shower bench or chair.

Mike Holmes emphasizes the importance of planning ahead. If you’re not ready to install grab bars just yet, consider future-proofing your space by adding proper wall blocking or supports behind the drywall during any bathroom renovation. That way, the structure is in place when you’re ready to add them later, without needing to open up the walls again.

2. Improve Lighting

Enhance lighting in hallways, staircases, and entrances. Add night lights in bedrooms and bathrooms. Brighter, well-placed lighting helps reduce trips and makes moving around easier, especially at night.

3. Switch to Lever Handles

Replace round door knobs and twist faucets with lever-style handles. They’re easier to use, especially for those with arthritis or limited grip strength.

4. Declutter and Clear Pathways

As Ronny Wiskin, Accessibility specialist pointed tripping hazards are the #1 cause of injury and the first thing you should keep in mind when renovating for aging in place.

Keep floors free from clutter, cords, and loose rugs. Arrange furniture to create clear, wide walking paths for mobility aids like walkers or canes.

5. Add Smart Devices

Voice-activated assistants and smart home features like motion-sensor lights or video doorbells add convenience and boost safety without requiring physical effort.

6. Reorganize Storage

Simple updates like reorganizing storage are what Mike calls “smart aging-in-place planning”. They make everyday life easier now and in the future. Store frequently used items at waist level to avoid bending or stretching. Simple organizers and labelled bins can make everyday tasks easier.

Small updates can have a huge impact. By making these changes now, you’re creating a safer, more accessible home that supports independence for years to come—no renovation required.
